20 October 2003 Newsletter

I just got off the phone with Capt. Chuck Naiser (naiser@dbstech.com).  He was poling a client along a weed bed as we spoke, in the Port Aransas area, trying to be stealthy while getting into casting range of a school of tailing redfish about a hundred feet in front of him.  It never ceases to amaze this old ‘field and streamer’ the convenience of a cell phone even though I will be the last person in the
USA to own one!   He said the tides are down to a more seasonal level, but still a little high,  the water is not clear but better than it has been and the sunshine bright.   (My mind keeps wandering to Chuck’s client casting to the red’s. . . . . . . .).

Please remember I will be closed from this Saturday, October 25th through Sunday November 2nd.  GONE FISHEN!  I will be in the Mexican Caribbean in the lower Yucatan for Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon.  I am staying at a friend of mine’s house (www.theblueheaven.com) that he rents out during most of the year at a very reasonable cost and can accommodate groups of up to 10 people.  The house is very nice on the beach near the Belize border.  Guides, restaurants, groceries etc. make for a very low cost and totally ‘laid back’ adventure.  I hope to relate interesting stores in my next newsletter.

A new Website for those of you interested in hill country Striper fishing – www.trophystripers.com.   I received an email from a client telling me of his adventures on Inks Lake and a striper nearly 40 pounds!!!

Remember the Alamo (Fly Fishers that is) meet the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 7: p.m. at the 1st Presbyterian Church on Broadway.  Good group of guys (and gals).  If you are looking for information or someone to fish with stop in for their regular meeting.  Everyone is anticipating a good trout season on the Guadalupe this winter so may want to renew or join the Trout Unlimited Hill Country group for access to the best of the waters.

Also, please keep in mind my new Monday store hours – 12: noon to 8: p.m.  Herb Mossman will be here to help anyone with questions on fly tying, and the evenings from 5: to 8: will be open tying and yarn spinning.  You may want to either bring your rod for a little help on your casting or try one of mine out back.

I am building up inventory in preparation for the Christmas season with new rods and additional product.  This place is beginning to look like a legitimate rod and fly shop!  Mostly fly rods, but I do have a selection of spin and bait casting rods for sale and blanks to be built.

Adios Amigo’s – Mucho Gracias!  (The extent of my Spanish, other than uno mas cervesa por favor!)  (I can’t spell in Spanish either!).
