April 5, 2005 Newsletter

Much to my regret but in the interest of prolonging my longevity, I am going to close the shop on MONDAY’S beginning this coming Monday April the 11th.  I have enjoyed considerable business of late on Monday’s but I find working 50 plus hours a week doesn’t agree with my home life and disposition. . . . . My regular hours will remain the same – 9: a.m. to 5: p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10: a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday’s.

I am looking for volunteers for treatment of a very contagious spring disease called ‘Fishing Pox’ which afflicts many adult males.  Symptoms are continual complaint as to a need of fresh air, sunshine and relaxation.  Those afflicted have blank expressions, sometimes deaf to wife and kids, and have very little taste for work, usually seen checking tackle catalogues or hanging out at RODMAKERS, mumbles to himself, and lies to everyone.  No known cure!  Victim should get out as often as possible!

I nearly always ask a customer if he has had a chance to fish or have some quality time for himself and so often before he can reply, his cell phone carried in his pocket rings.  I was at a stop light the other day when a customer rolled down his window and I asked him ‘the question’ just as his cell phone rang, he simply shrugged his shoulders and shook his head.  I walked a golf course with my son Ryan this past SUNDAY afternoon enjoying a beautiful day and time with my son, but we were interrupted numerous times with his cell phone ringing in his golf bag.  I guess I can forgive him for the indiscretion as he and his wife just had a baby girl.  Cells phones have become such a way of life as to be compared to putting on your watch in the morning, except far more intrusive.  I recall when cell phones first came into existence, they were more a status symbol than a necessity in our daily lives, and although a vital part of many peoples business, I believe they are responsible for much of the stress we endure and consume much of the time we used to spend doing what we enjoyed.  On several occasions while fishing I have seen cell phones in the pockets of those in or on the water, many times getting ruined by rain or an inadvertent fall.  If I have a point, I guess it would be my wish people could ‘re-prioritize’ their lives by turning their phones off, opening the window in the car, off while shopping, off in a restaurant, off when out for a walk or whatever, and take note of their surroundings – after all, it is one remedy in the cure of ‘fishing pox’.  I am very fortunate in my business as I have a neon ‘Gone Fishen’ light in my window that when lighted, announces the fact I am spending time away from work and I rely on my old ‘land line’ and answering machine.  When my light is off I am open and working and will return calls and email I may have missed.  Remember Lucy in the Peanuts comic strip and her sign ‘the doctor is in’. . . . . . ?  Sometimes a cell phone isn’t the only thing that needs recharging . . . . . . my advice, hire a guide and go fishing – by yourself, and enjoy a guides company without the dreaded cell phone, and witness our beautiful spring.  Just may be good for business and relationships.  I don’t hate cell phones; I just hate our reliance on them.  Here ends the sermon!

A local freight company just notified me of a delivery of the new ‘Cajun Anchors’ I ordered informing me of the freight bill – which amounts to nearly what the anchor’s cost me. . . . . . I. believe this to be a one time order!  A Cajun Anchor is a stainless steel shaft with a large ‘O’ ring on top and a fairly sharp pointed end that can simply be pushed, dropped, or thrown into the bottom with a short 3/8” line attached to your boat or Kayak.  For Kayaker’s I got them in 3 foot lengths that would also work well by dropping through the scupper hole.  For flats boats, I am getting them in 4 foot lengths.  Come in and take a look – they sound like a great answer to noisy and messy anchors.

I have been building numerous rods of late and have several beauties on the rod rack ready for someone that wants to get control back in their life. . . . . . . I am re-supplied with Tibor Reels, good selection of flies and all the other ‘stuff’ should you require or want.

Many thanks for your business.  Remember, the ‘cure’ begins here!
